After bland western prequels to his flagship drama “Yellowstone,” producer Taylor Sheridan finds marginally more fertile territory in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” a series that will devote each season to a different frontier lawman or outlaw. Eventually, Bass escapes, hiding out during the remaining days of the Civil War before settling down and trying his hand at farming. Dennis Quaid in "Lawmen: Bass Reeves." "Two dead Thoroughbreds in two days with the same trainer on the same track means one thing: Belmont Park is failing to protect horses," PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo said in a statement. Including Mashnee Girl and Excursionniste, four horses have died during races at Belmont Park's spring/summer meet, which began on May 4 and has encompassed 1,670 horses starting in 214 races, according to McKenna. Saturday's Belmont Stakes capped a tumultuous five weeks of racing that normally shines a bright light on the sport of kings.

Both Baffert and Pletcher have a gift with horses and their demanding owners. One of the horses, a colt named Forte, will face off against the Baffert-trained National Treasure and seven other thoroughbreds in the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Horses that he trains have failed 30 drug tests over four decades — most notably Medina Spirit, who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby but failed a test for a prohibited drug and was disqualified. That colt was only the second horse in the Derby’s 149-year history whose victory was revoked because of a drug violation.

What I mean is that I liked him better, and trusted him more. But it was also easy to imagine arguing about all that over drinks and cigarettes, thanks to Amis’s inexhaustible intellectual brio and his undentable good humor. That quality, even more than his satirical flair or the buoyant elegance of his prose, marks his greatest feat of self-invention. Whether these are still — or ever were — defining characteristics of American culture is an argument for another day. The point is that they were decidedly not attitudes associated with English writers up until then, especially not those of Kingsley Amis’s generation.

CNN —Two more horses have died at Churchill Downs, the home of the famed Kentucky Derby, officials from the track announced on Saturday. A total of seven horses have now died at the racetrack in the week-long lead up to the race. On Friday, racehorse trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was suspended indefinitely by Churchill Downs following the “highly unusual” deaths of two of his horses, Parents Pride and Chasing Artie. Three other horses – not trained by Joseph – also died in recent days. According to Churchill Downs, Wild on Ice, a Derby contender, was hurt while training on Thursday and Take Charge Briana was injured in a race on Tuesday.

Until the crowning in 1953 of Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the coronations of kings and queens were seen only by those in the abbey. Yet elements of the ceremony, which was a largely solemn and ritualistic service with just dashes of modernity, remained distinctly intimate for those inside the abbey. Charles himself looked occasionally meek, as when he knelt before the altar with four members of the clergy surrounding him.
